No Writing? Imagine our world without it. Our world would be so bland and boring. This year I have mastered the skills of conversation, details, and research. I also learned that examples and explanations make your essay stronger and longer. I am really proud of the non-narrative essay I did in the middle of the year because of all the things that I put into it.
I chose this piece because I really liked doing the research and I like the topic I chose was texting, because I can relate to it along with most of the kids in my grade. This piece was fun and I didn’t have to hurry to finish it and I got to relax a little more than I did with my other pieces because I could relate to it the most.
I never really went looking around for information but now I learned to write what you know first then do research to make your story or essay better, longer, and teach people about things they probably didn’t know. For example when I did my essay I did about texting and I learned that wexting or walking while texting is against the law in Pennsylvania, New York, and a couple of other states too because a woman caught on camera while wexting and fell into a fountain in the mall and the video went viral.
Last year I put details into my piece but they weren’t that descriptive and creative. This year I have more than enough details for a story and they are strong, creative, and descriptive. You have to have good details in a story and thanks to Mrs. Bubalis I learned how to make details really descriptive.
In conclusion I think that I have improved as a writer in many ways. The writing skills that I do well are conversation, organization, and details. I think I can improve my endings, beginnings, and know when to stop my paragraphs and start a new one.
Texting
I love to text. It is a part of our society today. Texting is a way to contact people electronically. Texting is something most people do every day.
It’s the new way to talk. Eighty seven percent of the world’s population text daily. Researchers say that 8 trillion text messages were sent in2011. Most teens send more than 100 text messages a day. I know my cousin sends about 300 text messages a day because all of her friends text her.
It’s easier to make plans with your friends than trying to call them because they might have their phone on vibrate or they might not be on their phone so they can answer your text message later because it stays on their screen until they check it. If you leave a voicemail most people either erase it or don’t even check their voicemail because they don’t know their password or something like that.
Texting is a faster way of talking to your friends. The new phones today have touch screens and/or keyboards so they can text faster because it is like having a mini laptop keyboard in your hands. More and more kids that aren’t even in middle school are getting phones so they can text their friends instead of talking to them on video games or calling them on phones and most children don’t like it when their parents overhear them talking to their friends so now they can text their friends because it is silent communication and your parents don’t hear you talking.
Some teachers and researchers say that texting is the new form of writing. People say texting is bad writing, but it is writing most people do everyday. Kids write more for reasons meaningful to them by texting. Some teachers say texting has an educational tie-in and that texting actually stretches language skills by writing words more and more everyday Some people say you will spell words wrong but if they are wrong it actually teaches you how to spell better.
Texting is separating children from their families. Most kids just stay in their rooms all day texting their friends. Their parents and siblings are trying to talk to them and their lost in their own world. After dinner some kids go back to their rooms and keep texting instead of watching a movie or playing a game with their family. Mothers and fathers don’t know a lot about their children because their locked in their rooms texting.
Some researchers say that texting has some bad physical effects on you. The physical effects on you when you are texting are when you text the normal reaction time is 2-4 seconds where when you are not texting the normal reaction time is 1-2 seconds. The position you are in when texting is bad posture. Texting can cause problems in arms, wrist, and hands.
Texting can cause health problems because the radiation from the screen can cause cancer. Being on your phone all day may cause obesity because you just sit around and eat. It can also cause you to get a brain tumor because if you have it by your head all day the heat and radiation actually start to make a brain tumor in your brain. Another thing that happens when you put your phone in your shirt pocket is cell phones do indeed make measurable electrical and magnetic fields. But the strength of these fields will not affect ordinary heart rhythm or function researchers say. Some studies have also looked at whether cell phones can present a danger to those with an implanted pacemaker, internal defibrillator or a similar device. The results, for the most part, have been good.
In different parts of the United States people are starting to get fined for wexting. (texting while walking). Earlier in 2011 a woman became a YouTube hit when security cameras taped her wexting and falling into a fountain in a Pennsylvania mall. Because of that incident Pennsylvania and other states across the country are starting to fine people for wexting.
I learned that texting is bad but I don’t care. I love to text and I don’t care about all the negative things people say about it.
